Book Review - The Home Front Nurses by Rachel Brimble

 The Home Front Nurses
By Rachel Brimble

The start of a BRAND NEW historical series from Rachel Brimble

September 1941, Bath – three friends are about to find that some of the biggest battles are to be found on the home front…

As war rages and brave soldiers returning home from the frontline need nurses more than ever, fiercely proud redhead Sylvia Roberts is determined to help in any way she can. In spite of her mother’s belief she isn’t good enough, Sylvia believes that becoming a home front nurse is her calling.

Together with the two friends she makes on her first day in the job – Freda and Veronica – she knows she can help save lives. And, as the devastation of war shows no signs of ceasing, their work becomes ever more vital.

Then Sylvia’s life is thrown into the path of a man who might just be able to capture her heart. Even though he is somebody who everyone – except her best friends – seems prejudiced against. Can love really conquer all, in times of war?

One thing she knows is that – in the dangerous days that will follow – she and her friends will all need to support each other right to the end…

Review

Rachel Brimble has written a novel that is not only a gripping read but is also one filled with emotion.

The story is set in Bath during World War II and although its neighbouring city of Bristol has so far had the worst of the bombings, the hospitals are preparing to take on casualties from the neighbouring city. The presence of the war is always on the forefront of the protagonists minds.

There are three protagonist that the story follows, Sylvia, Freda and Veronica. I absolutely adored the depiction of Sylvia, she is a very kind and lovely young woman who unfortunately has a mother who does not support her in anything she tries to do. Sylvia is an accomplished nurse, but Eileen shows nothing but contempt for her daughter, no congratulations, no I'm proud of you, which really made me dispise Eillen from the get go. However, Sylvia is made of stern stuff, although she feels everything very deeply. I thought Sylvia was a wonderful character who I enjoyed reading about.

The story is utterly gripping, so much so that I read it in one sitting. The second book in this series cannot come soon enough!
